# I Built a Lightweight Prompt Testing Tool That Supports OpenAI, Anthropic, and Groq Simultaneously

**TL;DR:** [Prompt Lab](https://citriac.github.io/prompt-lab.html) is a free, browser-only prompt debugging tool. No backend, no data storage — just paste your API keys and start testing across multiple LLM providers at once.

---

## The Problem

Every time I needed to debug a prompt, I was jumping between tabs: OpenAI Playground, Anthropic Console, Groq's dashboard... Each has a different UI, no shared history, and I'd have to reconfigure parameters from scratch every time.

What I actually wanted was one place where I could:
- Write a prompt once
- Send it to multiple models in parallel
- Compare responses side by side
- Iterate without losing my history

---

## What Prompt Lab Does

### Multi-Model Testing

Connect OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, and Groq all at once. Write your prompt, hit send, and get responses from every model you've configured — side by side.

Supported models:
- **OpenAI**: GPT-4o, GPT-4o-mini, GPT-3.5-turbo
- **Anthropic**: Claude 3.5 Sonnet, Claude 3 Opus, Claude 3 Haiku
- **Google**: Gemini 1.5 Pro, Gemini 1.5 Flash
- **Groq**: Llama 3.1 70B, Llama 3.1 8B, Mixtral 8x7B

### Variable Injection

Use `{{variable}}` syntax in your prompts and define variable values separately. This makes it easy to test the same prompt structure across different inputs without rewriting it each time.

```
Summarize the following article in {{tone}} tone:
{{article_text}}
```

Then set `tone = "formal"` and `article_text = "..."` as variables. Change one, re-run, compare.

### 8 Built-In Templates

Included templates for common use cases:
- Text summarization
- Code review
- Email drafting
- Data extraction
- Translation
- Creative writing
- Q&A
- Chain-of-thought reasoning

### Streaming Output

Responses stream in real-time rather than waiting for the full completion. For long outputs, you see the model "thinking" as it writes.

### Session History

Your prompts and responses are saved locally in browser storage. You can go back and compare earlier test runs without losing context.

---

## Technical Details

The whole thing is a single HTML file:

```
File size: ~45KB
Dependencies: none (vanilla JS)
Backend: none
Your API keys: stored in localStorage only, never transmitted to my servers
Data stored externally: none
```

API calls go directly from your browser to each provider's API. I don't sit in the middle. Your keys, your calls.

## Who It's For

- **AI developers** testing prompts during development
- **Product managers** evaluating which model fits a use case
- **Indie hackers** who need quick prompt iteration without setting up a full environment
- Anyone who's tired of juggling multiple provider dashboards

---

## What's Next

The core use case — test a prompt across multiple models — is fully functional and free. If there's interest, potential paid features:

- Batch testing (run 50 prompts, get 50 comparisons)
- A/B prompt comparison with metrics
- Export to CSV/JSON
- Team sharing

But for most individual use cases, the free version does the job.

## Try It

Feedback welcome, especially from people who have existing prompt testing workflows — I'm curious what's missing compared to tools you already use.
